The GESAN

Global Exotics Student Associations Network

About the GESAN

As you know, exotic and wildlife medicine is sometimes underrepresented, despite the incredible diversity and importance of these species. That’s why we created the Global Exotics Student Associations Network (GESAN) to connect veterinary associations that are passionate about wildlife and exotic animal medicine.

The GESAN aims to foster collaboration, share valuable resources, and create opportunities for veterinary students passionate about wildlife and exotic animal medicine across Europe and beyond. Through this network, you can connect with like-minded associations, access conferences and contribute to a thriving community of future exotic animal professionals.

The Vision Behind the GESAN

Exotic species are incredibly diverse, playing vital roles in ecosystems, zoos, aquariums, and even households. Providing proper medical care for these animals requires a broad and varied set of skills, as their health and welfare depend on knowledge spanning multiple disciplines.

However, addressing the challenges surrounding exotic species—such as conservation or advanced medical care demands international collaboration.

Despite the importance of this field, many veterinary students feel there is a gap between their interest in exotic species and their representation in university curriculums. The path to a career in exotic animal medicine can also be unclear, as it often lacks structured guidance.

In response to these challenges, students worldwide have formed associations dedicated to exotic animal medicine.

Recognizing this shared vision, WESA and Archaeopteryx have come together to create the GESAN.

This initiative unites veterinary student organizations specializing in wildlife, reptiles, invertebrates, aquatic animals, birds, and small mammals. By fostering collaboration, GESAN aims to make educational resources more accessible and empower students to pursue careers in exotic animal medicine.
